2018 Mission Trip to The Gambia

Dick & Cathy Gurley, and David Musa

Several have inquired for more detail re out trip.  So, the purpose of this note is to provide some clarity on the trip’s purpose.

After we (Dick and Cathy Gurley) arrive on August 11th, we will be there teaching four courses at a pastors summer school for about 4 hours a day for six days a week.  This is the final year of a three year program that Steven Musa – Kormaya has established to encourage young ministry leaders.  The class consists of 25 ministry leaders who have been with us for the previous two years. The courses are:

  • How to study the Bible (from a devotional aspect) – this will be a train the trainer course
  • Lands of the Bible including geography and biblical history
  • Christian Leadership
  • God’s Grace

We taught the first half of the last two courses last year and will be completing the courses this year.  We will be team teaching these courses with Cathy being the main teacher on the first and third courses.  I will be leading the middle two courses.

In addition to teaching, we will be carrying three new computers for the computer lab to replace those computers that are no longer working.  After upgrading the computers, we will work with the students in the computer lab an hour or two each day.  Some of the students had never seen a computer prior to our first year in the Gambia – they are fast learners.

David Musa will be joining us on August 25th and will stay until September 8th.  He will  complete teaching his course on Hermeneutics during his stay.

The students will graduate from the pastors summer school on September 7th.  This should be a very joyous occasion.

Probably the most rewarding part of the trip will be our interaction with the students, staff at the hotel, and staff at the school.  After this period of time, we know each other and they are willing to open up to discuss issues.  Cathy and I represent a different generation and a different culture so we have some very interesting conversations before, during and after school.

As you can see, this will be a very busy time for us.  Please pray for our stamina.  Thank you for asking questions.

Blessings

Dick Gurley
